Age Group Swimming Training Groups

Blue Group

Admittance: Selected by PHX Blue Group Coach, Head Age Group Coach and Red Coach.

Entrance into the Blue Group requires a high level of year-round commitment for age group swimming. Recommendations:  Ages 11-14 and “AA” Time Standard. Goal of 80% practice attendance. (Recommend 5-6 practices per week). Group Focus:  The responsibility for one’s swimming is now shifting to the athlete’s responsibility at this stage/level of swimming; continued focus on the aerobic side of workouts with increased intensity and duration; continuation of developing race skills and strategies; being a team player; self-responsibility; sportsmanship; importance of nutrition and the increased importance of dryland in the weekly schedule.  Athletes should strive to participate in at least one meet every other month of each swim season.  Individuals must maintain commitment level (based on monthly attendance) to continue long-term in this group.  *The coaching staff reserves the right to make exceptions for the good of the individual athlete development.  ***

Red Group
Admittance: Selected by PHX Red Group Coach, Head Age Group Coach and White Coach.  Recommendations:  Ages 10-14 and “A” Time Standard.  Goal of 75% practice attendance. (Recommend 4-5 practices per week).  Group Focus:  Developing/building the aerobic base with increase in the training focus being shared almost equally to stroke work, continuation of developing race skills and strategies, being a team player, self-responsibility; sportsmanship, importance of nutrition and the increased importance and role of dryland in the weekly schedule.  Athletes should strive to participate in at least one meet every other month of each swim season.  *The coaching staff reserves the right to make exceptions for the good of the individual athlete development.  *** 

 

White Group  

Admittance: Selected by PHX White Group Coach, Head Age Group Coach and Rising Star Coach. Recommendations:  Ages 9-12, “BB” Time Standard and legal 200IM.  Goal of 67% practice attendance. (Recommend 3-4 practices per week).  Athletes should strive to participate in at least one meet every other month.  Group Focus:  Building increased endurance (first phases of training) with ongoing stroke work; continuation of learning how to race; self-responsibility; sportsmanship and increased dryland.  *The coaching staff reserves the right to make exceptions for the good of the individual athlete development.   ***

 

Rising Stars 

Admittance: Selected by PHX Rising Star Coach, Head Age Group Coach and Starfish Coach.  Recommendations:  Ages 7-10 and able to swim at least 25 yards legally of all four competitive strokes and perform a legal 100 IM. Goal of 55% practice attendance. (Recommend 3 practices per week).  Due to the ongoing learning stroke progressions, the athlete should maintain weekly attendance throughout the duration of the season for maximum development and improvement.  Group Focus:  Daily/on-going stroke work; introduction to primary racing skills and situations, being a teammate; self-responsibility, team pride and introduction to dryland.  *The PHX Rising Star or Starfish Coach will evaluate the individual during a tryout PRIOR to making a recommendation &/or placement to the PHX Competitive Team and the Rising Star Group.  ***

 

Pre-Competitive to Competitive Groups

 

Starfish Group 

Admittance: Selected by PHX Starfish Coach, Head Age Group Coach and Rising Star Coach.  Recommendations:  Ages 6-9 and able to swim 25 yards of both freestyle and backstroke and a working knowledge of both the Breaststroke and Butterfly kick. A child must have the emotional maturity to be independent of parent (s) &/or Caretaker throughout the time allotted for the practice. Goal of 55% practice attendance.  (Recommend 2-3 practices per week.  Due to the on-going learning stroke progressions, the child should maintain weekly attendance throughout the duration of the season for maximum development and improvement. Group Focus:  Learning/acquiring of four (4) competitive strokes; Handling self in a group (team) setting; team pride and introduction to dryland. The PHX Rising Star &/or Starfish Coach will evaluate during a tryout prior to recommendation &/or placement on the Starfish Group and the Pre-Competitive team.  ***
